Greater St. Louis MGMA Gives Back to the Community
A few years ago, the Board of Directors for Greater St. Louis MGMA decided that we as an organization should find a way (or ways) to give back to the community that we and our patients live in. As President of our organization, I am charged with the task of deciding which charity (or in this year’s case, charities) the organization will pledge to support. This year I have chosen two charities to support: The Lupus Foundation of America and Lydia’s House.
The first charity is the Lupus Foundation of America, more specifically, the Lupus Walk here in St. Louis. The Lupus Foundation of America’s goal is to help solve the cruel mystery that Lupus is. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that can affect any part of the body. This is an excerpt from the LFA website:
“In lupus, something goes wrong with the immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu). Normally our immune systems produce proteins called "antibodies" which protect the body from these invaders. “Autoimmunity" means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues ("auto" means "self"). As a result, it creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.”
Greater St. Louis MGMA registered a team at the WALK TO END LUPUS NOW on Saturday May 18, 2019 at the Chesterfield Central Park and Amphitheater and pledged a goal to raise $1,000 for Lupus research. Lupus has a close place in my heart as I have family members that suffer from this disease and I work in Rheumatology so we see lupus patients daily.
The second charity is Lydia’s House. Our fearless President-Elect is a very active
supporter of Lydia’s House. Straight from Lydia’s House Mission Statement “Lydia’s House works in faith to end domestic violence by being a place of healing and a voice of hope for abused women and their children”.
Lydia’s House is always in need of supplies to give to the women and children so that they can rebuild their lives in their own homes. We collected items that were needed at the Annual Conference in October, including things like paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, pots and pans, toiletries - things of that nature. Lydia's House always has opportunities to offer your support. Click here for the full wish list.
Greater St. Louis MGMA thanks you for all that you do for your practice, your patients, and your community. Together, we can make a difference.
