Brittany Newell, Sandberg, Phoenix and Von Gontard

Brittany earned her Juris Doctor from Southern Illinois University School of Law where she graduated in the top 10 of her class.  While attending SIU she received three CALI Excellence for the Future Awards, Phi Kappa Phi 3L Award, and the Legal Medicine Perspectives Award. She was a member of the Journal of Legal Medicine and Managing Editor of Legal Medicine Perspectives.

Brittany is licensed to practice law in the States of Missouri and Illinois and before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. She focuses her practice on product liability and medical malpractice defense work, including record production and HIPAA compliance. 


Case Study: Credit Card on File in our Practice

We grew tired of playing the collection game and watching our bad debts increase. We implemented Credit Card on File 18 months ago. We wait until the patient’s insurance pays, then we charge the patient’s credit card for their balance. We had highs and lows along the way, so this session will cover our decision process, implementation and results.

Christine M. Keefe, Metro Imaging

Christine M. Keefe, CPA, CMPE is the CFO & Director of Strategic Initiatives for Metro Imaging. Metro Imaging is a group of five outpatient imaging centers in St. Louis, Missouri. Chris is responsible for financial operations and performance, budgeting, billing, information systems and expansion projects. Chris has been with Metro Imaging for 15 years. Prior to joining Metro Imaging, Chris was a partner at BKD, LLP, a regional CPA and consulting firm. Chris is past-president of Medical Group Managers Association (MGMA) of Greater St. Louis.

Lucas Brown, US Bank

Lucas Brown has a diverse background of experience across the accounts receivables management industry.  He has spent over 16 years in debt recovery operations with a focus in predictive analytics, data management, and business strategy.   This time includes 14 years’ experience in healthcare billing services and debt collection management for both regional and national healthcare providers.  Lucas currently holds the role of Analytics Manager in the US Bank, Payment Services Division.  


Building a New Practice from the Ground Up…Literally

Renovating or designing any care facility is a daunting task.  What size should we make the exam room?  Do we put exam rooms along the windows?  Do we put offices along the windows instead of exam rooms?  My clinic is special; we need to design it completely different.  That’s not the way we have always done it.  This will never work.  This riveting session shares the experiences of a large academic medical practice during their journey to design and plan a new facility from the ground up.  Learn how SLUCare established standards, engaged all levels of the care team, cleared hurdles, and assessed all current processes to design a new out-patient center.

Melynda Pryor, SLUCare Physician Group

Melynda Pryor, MHA, is the Director of Practice Facility Planning for SLUCare Physician Group.  She has been in operations and leadership roles within the medical field for over 15 years.   Her work is focused on improving patient experience, building services to meet patient needs, and utilizing Lean methodology create process improvement endeavors.    Her work over the last 2 years has harnessed all of that experience to lead an expansive and talented team to design a new state of the art ambulatory care center.    She is passionate about building a care facility to exceed the expectations patients, families, learners, staff, and providers.


St. Louis Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

The St. Louis Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) monitors the prescribing and dispensing of schedule II-IV controlled substances to assist in the identification and prevention of prescription drug misuse and abuse.  The program's goals are to 1) improve controlled substance prescribing by providing critical information regarding a patient's controlled substance prescription history, 2) inform clinical practice by identifying patients at high-risk who would benefit from early interventions, and 3) reduce the number of people who misuse, abuse, or overdose while making sure patients have access to safe, effective treatment.

The St. Louis County Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) extends throughout several Missouri counties to provide access to critical information for providers and pharmacies, learn more about the goals and function of the PDMP and how to register during this presentation.

About the Speakers

Jessica Berkemeier, St. Charles County Department of Public Health

 Jessica Berkemeier, MPH, is an Epidemiologist and PDMP coordinator for St. Charles County Department of Public Health. Her work for St. Charles has been primarily in outreach and education for pharmacists, physicians, and the public regarding the prescription drug monitoring program. Jessica graduated with her Masters of Public Health this year to work on PDMP efforts. She previously worked for the Hawaii State Department of Public Health as the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program Coordinator and the Clay County Public Health Center as the chronic disease epidemiologist. 




Kate Donaldson, St. Louis County Department of Public Health

Kate Donaldson, MPH, is the Manager for the Assessment, Evaluation and Policy Program in the Division of Health Promotion and Public Health Research for the St. Louis County Department of Public Health.  The program designs and conducts community and program assessment and evaluation, and provides guidance and leadership for a "health in all policies" approach to policy work around the department's strategic priorities, including behavioral health and substance abuse, healthy eating and active living, chronic disease, sexually transmitted infections and communicable disease, and health equity. She currently manages the St. Louis County Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, the community health assessment process, and the department's performance management system. Previously, she worked on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities and Active Living by Design initiatives and the University of Missouri Extension's Stock Healthy, Shop Healthy program. Her work has focused on providing technical assistance on partnership development, community collaboration, implementation and evaluation for healthy eating, active living and childhood obesity initiatives.

Ron is a Partner and the Health Care Industry Group Leader at Brown Smith Wallace. Ron advises providers, payors and companies that support the health care industry through a variety of value-add channels. Ron and his team, among other services, work with clients in the preparation and implementation of components of Health Care Reform, which is the driving force for the delivery and payment of quality services. With almost 30 years of health care industry experience, he has in-depth knowledge of the operational structure of pre-acute, acute and post-acute health care environments. Ron brings clients hands-on experience as both an industry executive and consultant.


David M. Contrera, Brown Smith Wallace

Dave is a Manager in the Brown Smith Wallace Advisory Services practice where he specializes in business performance consulting.  Dave has more than 25 years of experience assessing and developing process, systems and organization improvement recommendations to accelerate a company’s growth and profitability. At Brown Smith Wallace, Dave leads a team of industry experts that help organization across all phases of improvement. 

Prior to joining Brown Smith Wallace, Dave spent 30 years of his career with Anheuser-Busch InBev. He started as a Senior Director of Manufacturing Accounting, and most recently served as Senior Director for the Business Service Center and North America project team.


Credentialing Doesn’t Have to be Hard

Credentialing is the process by which payers verify providers’ backgrounds before allowing them into their networks, and is critical to a practice’s ability to get paid for patient care, yet can be a frustrating, time-consuming task.  In this presentation, Chastity and Brittany will demonstrate that credentialing doesn’t have to be hard! Chastity brings more than 20 years of experience to the Anders Health Care group, touching nearly every aspect of practice and facility management. From starting at the front desk, through claim adjudication, Chastity has successfully worked with practices, hospitals, clearinghouses and insurance companies. She has experience ranging from underwriting, to claim processing as well as clearinghouse assessments and operation improvements. Her unique experience in the healthcare industry has allowed her to see the full spectrum of revenue cycle and allows her to successfully identify and resolve client issues with revenue cycle improvement, EHR/PMS implementation, reporting, benchmarking and claims processing.


Brittany L. Rongey, Anders Healthcare Services

As a health care consultant, Brittany works on credentialing services for clients of Anders Health Care Services. She enjoys working with physician groups to simplify their credentialing processes. Brittany also helped launch a new credentialing software that optimizes processes for clinicians and office managers and better serves health care clients.

About the Speaker

 Jodie Thompson, Norcal Group

 Jodie Thompson is a Senior Risk Management Specialist at NORCAL Mutual Insurance Company, focusing on policyholder needs and customer interactions in the Central Region. Jodie has over 20 years of clinical and healthcare risk management experience. Prior to joining NORCAL, Jodie worked seven years at a professional liability insurance company in based in mid-Missouri. She has extensive experience providing individualized loss control consultation, educational programs and services to hospitals and physicians. As a clinical RN, Jodie worked as a cardiac ICU nurse in Joplin and Jefferson City, Missouri. Jodie holds a Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law, a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and an Associate Degree in Nursing.


Point of Service Collections: An Illustration of How an Organization Improved Cash Flow Significantly through Point of Service Collections

The presentation will focus on the actions and results of an organization that initiated a concentrated effort to reduce the dollars being written off as uncollectable due to bad point of service effectiveness.  The financial effectiveness will be detailed as well as the processes behind the improved performance of all the divisions.  Other activities in addition to POS will be discussed as well, some relating to back office, collections, courtesy write offs, etc.

  • A better understand the need for and how to increase transparency between the “front office” and “back office” processes and personnel.

Allen Aufderheide, ENT Associates

Allen began his healthcare career with St. Louis University Hospital as a Financial Analyst and over the years gained experience in various accounting, finance, and revenue cycle positions in several hospitals in and around the St. Louis area and Missouri rising to the position of CEO.  Hospitals in the St. Louis area include Christian and Jewish before they became BJC facilities, Shriners hospital, and Forest Park and St. Alexius hospitals. Other Missouri hospitals included Missouri Southern in Dexter, and Callaway Community Hospital in Fulton, MO.

Outside of healthcare he has experience in manufacturing, industrial services, financial services, and firefighting/trauma services.

Currently he is the Practice Manager of ENT Associates, Inc. in Chesterfield, MO.  The practice has seven providers, functioning out of three offices.  Two are in Chesterfield, and one is in O Fallon, MO.  The practice is a division of Sound Health Services, a 26-physician group with eight divisions throughout the St. Louis area and Southern Illinois.
